Yvonne Boyd, Christopher Petersen and Spring Shine live and create magic in Argenta B.C.
Our approach to public art is to create pieces that are site specific and engage the public directly, to create long lasting maintenance free pieces that are attractive to all ages and invite both physical and emotional interactions. We believe that there is a place for art that is not intimidating but inviting and leaves the viewer as a participant, feeling enriched and closer in connection with the individual location. We create our pieces in direct response to the location and activities that are happening there. The site in question provides opportunity to engage the public in both a visual engagement as they walk through the breezeway and physically by providing points of interest that encourage people to stop and sit or interact with the art. Philosophically we share these ideals and strive to put them into practice with each project.
The differences in our artistic backgrounds enable us to approach a project from many angles, our individual practices have given us all unique skills and perspective on how to engage people with art. The results have been very well received by the public.
The three of us come from different artistic backgrounds. All of them focused on the beholder having some form of physical and emotional interaction directly with the art. Whether this be the playing of a beautiful musical instrument or walking through a space that is inviting or literally being the artwork themselves.
Most recently we have been working on a sculpture circuit linking the communities in the West Kootenays with large scale outdoor interactive cement sculptures, the goal; to create a sculpture circuit that encourages families to interact with art and the outdoors together.
Spring has been sculpting wood and stone for 25 years both figurative and abstract. Large stone sculpture from his Steatite quarry here in the Kootenays and public art with mixed media.
Christopher has an architectural background works primarily in non figurative sculpture in wood metal and cement as well as design and building of timber frame homes that gives him a unique perspective on how spaces are used and interacted with to make them inviting and pleasing to spend time in and around.
Yvonne Boyd has a background in figurative sculpture in both rock and wood and has been working directly with the public creating live art in the ephemeral practice of body and face painting as well as commission pieces in both two and three dimensional materials stained glass windows and marquetry doors both that incorporate art into peoples day to day living in an accessible way
